Rick's Journal : January 2008

Sunday 02/10/2008

Well, the past month and a half has been a busy one. Traveling to Florida, Christmas, annual snowmobile trip and training for my marathon have made it quite exciting.

First, the trip to Florida...it was a blast. Spent a day and a half in the Everglades capturing some really cool pictures of wildlife and scenery. There were so many birds and some really cool alligators. The second half of the trip was spent in Key West. Sun and fun, oh yeah! Did some deep sea fishing, beach sitting, scooter riding and a little drinking =). It was a quick trip, but a blast everyday. Much different from Colorado! You can check out the pictures here.

Second, Christmas was a great time as always. Spent Christmas Eve with Mike, Linda and Zach. Ate food and opened gifts. Zach is always fun to watch, especially this year with him understanding how presents work. The theme this year was the movie Cars. I got him a bunch of toy cars and he wouldn't put them down. I'd play a trick and hide one from him, but he was all over me trying to find it. Gotta have my Tow-mator!

Christmas day was spent with my friend Joe downtown Denver. Ate some ham and potatoes and then went out downtown for a few drinks. We ended up playing free billiards at a bar the entire night. I think I won 12 games to 11 games, so very close and a lot of fun. They even had free cookies, mmmm!

Third, the annual snowmobile trip...this year was a smaller group than hoped, but each year it gets harder to get everyone together. But with Mike, Todd, Mark and I ready to get out and do some riding this year, the wait was more than worth it. The riding was the best I have ever done. Day 1 was back to a spot we rode last year and it was all fresh powder with noone around but us. We spent the entire day in that area and it was incredible. Anywhere from 2-3 feet of fresh powder, with it snowing all day. Ahhhhhhh!

And if you want to see just how much someone can bury their sled in all this powder, just check out the pics here and you'll see just how buried Mike got his sled. It was amazing. That sled was down almost 10 feet in the snow. I couldn't believe how much snow all of us had to shovel to get that ski-doo out. It was awesome!

So with all that in the first day, it just started out the trip with a bang. Second day was much of the same, great powder and lots of riding (and resting =). Day 3 was more trail riding and checking out the Lions Head area of West Yellowstone, but still fun. And oh yeah, day 3 we woke to -30 below temperatures. Now that is a cold day!

Lastly, my marathon training. I've been doing really well with this. It was hard on my lungs and legs coming back from the snowmobile trip and missing the running, but only took me a couple of days running to get back into it. I've been sticking to my mileage buildup training schedule and so far it's working quite well. I'm at a point where I could run a half-marathon with no problem and around the 2 hour mark. Obviously that isn't 26.2 miles, but hopefully I'm getting there. Below is my training schedule from here until the 6/1 marathon:
